Here are some photographs that we have taken during out December 2007 summer holiday at South Broom, Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa. South Broom have one of the biggest crocodile farms in South Africa, hosting some of the oldest crocodiles in the country. The trip were very interesting and any photographers dream. We have seen how baby crocodiles are hatched, how the crododiles eat as well as some of the old lazy crocodiles swimming and laying in the sun! Africa Photographic About Chris Chris Smal was born before television hit South Africa in the capital city to nth generation parents. He grew up in the foothills of the Magaliesberg and spent countless happy hours in the mountains building tree houses, exploring on foot, freeing pets from snares and getting stung by wasps. He inherited his love for nature from his parents, who took their kids to the world famous Kruger National Park every year for a week long holiday. In 1988 he had the privilege of visiting Botswana’s Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve on an adventure camp. One night around the campfire in the former, he discussed with his friends how wonderful it would be to live in Botswana. Upon finishing school he studied Town/Urban Planning at the University of Pretoria, graduating with a Bachelors degree in 1993. He worked as a Town/Urban Planner for four years but soon found out that it wasn’t nearly as much fun being one as it had been studying to be one. Upon successful completion of a safari guide’s course he bid Town Planning farewell and embarked on a new career in adventure travel. His wanderings took him all over Southern and East Africa, including six 30 day trips from Johannesburg to Nairobi and four months leading seven 2 week tours in Botswana. The next three years were spent working in different parts of South Africa, including the St Lucia Estuary where he set up the first and only mokoro operation in South Africa, the area bordering on the central Kruger Park and the Park itself – guiding guests in open vehicles and on foot. In 2003 his teenage dream of living in Botswana finally came to fruition. He spent the first year managing a small tented camp in a remote part of northern Botswana. The second year was spent in the same area leading thirty-three 3 day walking trails in the same area. He was living a fantasy. Circumstances changed and he had to move on, this time to Abu Camp where he managed the camp, oversaw the guiding and got to train with, walk with and ride the trained elephants there. Having reached the pinnacle of his guiding career in Botswana, Chris moved back to South Africa and took what he now likes to think of as a year sabbatical practicing Town Planning again. It helped him to realize that he still didn’t like it and after less than a year a friend needed him to guide a two week tour in Botswana (for which he still held a professional guide license then and still does now) and it reminded him of what a special place he was missing. So when opportunity knocked the next year he went back into tourism and spent two and half years leading North Americans through Southern and Central Africa and on Madagascar on educational tours. Photography became a hobby over the years and through saving up tips he finally bought some decent equipment to capture all the intriguing creatures he got to see and the enchanting places he got to visit. He is also busy completing a diploma in photography which has improved his results a lot. His passion remains with wildlife, nature and photography and he shares it with his fiancée, Salomien Reinecke – who happens to be a photographer in her own right. About Salomien Salomien Reinecke is a photographer, photographic instructor and equipment specialist. She was born in Potchefstroom, grew up on a farm and matriculated from Potchefstroom Gimnasium in 1998 with art as one of her major subjects. She moved to Pretoria in 1999 and after starting work at one of the leading photographic labs soon got promoted to manager. She started pursuing this new career and completed several photographic courses. She has since moved into professional photography, has earned a well deserved reputation for providing excellent advice in retailing photographic equipment and enjoys training new and intermediate users and instilling a passion for photography in them. In her spare time she enjoys the outdoors and the photographic opportunities it provides. The girl’s name Salome \s(a)-lo-me\ is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "peace". Even before I became a professional photographer I was interested in stories and storytelling and how our stories define who we are. Through photography I found a universal way to tell stories that are instantly created – each image a snippet of the whole story, yet a story in itself.

In wedding photography my goal is to document the whole story of the day with images that are candid, beautiful and honest. I strive to capture the natural beauty in the most mundane, everyday moments. No glance is insignificant, no smile too common. These moments are the ones that tell the real story of your wedding day.

The other stories I love to tell are mainly focussed around pregnant mothers, newborns and babies of all ages. As with weddings, I feel privileged to be part of such an important time in a family’s lives.
